Lake Cumberland at a Glance
Created by the construction of Wolf
Creek Dam in 1950, the artificial Lake
Cumberland has dramatically boosted tourism in this south-central Kentucky
region. With 1,225 mi (1971 km) of shoreline, Lake Cumberland is considered one
of the best boating and fishing areas in the eastern United
States. Lake
Cumberland State Resort Park is a popular spot for golfing, hiking, horseback
riding and camping, and lodging and dining facilities are located on site. Situated
on the Tennessee border, Dale
Hollow Lake State Resort Park is another haven for outdoor pursuits, attracting
visitors with its golfing, scuba diving, hiking and mountain biking opportunities.
Travelers interested in history should tour Campbellsville's
historic downtown and visit the Civil War battle site. Campbellsville is also
convenient to Green
River Lake State Park, where anglers can hook Kentucky bass, bluegill, muskie
and crappie. Somerset
is a significant commercial center with plenty of shops, restaurants and hotels,
as well as easy access to Daniel
Boone National Forest.
